Lunar Splendor

The ”wolf moon” tonight gives us yet another reason to dive into the immeasurable riches of God’s glory. There are reasons all around us each and every day to praise God for His glory as He has revealed it to us.

Recalling what Clyde Kilby lectured on one night at Wheaton College, John Piper explains 10 Resolutions for Mental Health in the linked article. Resolution #6 says this: “I shall open my eyes and ears. Once every day I shall simply stare at a tree, a flower, a cloud, or a person. I shall not then be concerned at all to ask what they are but simply be glad that they are. I shall joyfully allow them the mystery of what Lewis calls their ‘divine, magical, terrifying and ecstatic‘ existence." This resolution has impacted me personally beyond measure. Piper was heavily influenced by Lewis who was influenced by Chesterton. Both of these men could make a grown man cry (don’t ask me how I know that…) when describing God’s glory as revealed in nature, processes, and people. Now, I ask that you bear with me here as I word vomit some things about the moon in an unstructured manner.

Genesis 1:16 (ESV): And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.

Here is where we are told that God hung the moon; quite literally and figuratively. The Spirit tells us that the moon was made with purpose as the ruler of the night. The evolutionist tells you that a planet collided with earth umpteen million years ago and the moon decide to hang around because he liked the neighborhood. Our planet has the perfect conditions for life because it has a creator with a purpose, that purpose having been decreed before the foundation of the world. The evolutionist tells you that we have life because over millions of years it just happened. Something similar to those little pills you put in water as a kid and you crossed your fingers hoping something cool would grow but you didn’t know what it would be. But what was that purpose that God created the lesser light for?

For starters, the moon's rotation on its axis matches up with its revolutions around the earth such that we always see the same side of the moon. Imagine when God was drawing that one up: "I think I'll only show them one side. One day people will be speculating about alien moon bases on the dark side of the moon." But seriously, what is the mathematic probability of this happening? We only ever see one side of the moon! The earth is rotating on its axis at roughly 1,000mph and the moon is flying around the earth at approximately 2,300mph. Ponder on that one.

There are apparently over 150 moons in our solar system and earth has ONE.

There are several species of animals that depend on the moon's cycles for their breeding cycles.

For thousands of years of human civilization the moon was used to keep time. Many people, before electricity, depended on the moon's light for certain fields of work. I won't bog down this article with information you can find one tab over.

This is an unscientific statement that's just cool to pretend given the size and distance of the moon, but the moon may also have shielded us from several deadly comets and asteroids in our history. Those craters aren't man made.

Many ecosystems, without the moon controlling the tides, namely the Great Barrier Reef, would be in jeopardy or destroyed. The domino effect of the GBR being destroyed is unfathomable, I'm sure you can find a YouTube video on that.

Lastly, speaking of the moon's control over tides, the moon actually controls the tides of all the oceans on earth. What does that mean? Consider the vast expanse of the oceans. Think about a child with his beach bucket going down to the water's edge on the great Mississippi Gulf Coast and getting a flesh eating bacteria.. sorry, didn't mean to digress. Imagine the child filling up his bucket with water and struggling to carry it back to the location he is building his sandcastle. He struggles with that condensed bucket of water. Have you ever picked up 15 gallons of water? Do I need to look up how many gallons of ocean water the "experts" estimate? The oceans are vast. The depths of them are literally incomprehensible. The last I checked we had only explored or mapped around 5% of it. Now, the moon whips it around like bath time, telling it when to rise and when to fall and where. Just THINK about what was going on when God planned this unlikely scenario. You have a rock, whose diameter is about the width of China, the distance of the diameter of the earth times thirty away from us, controlling the oceans. Do you honestly think God doesn't have a sense of humor? Does that even make sense? This is unsearchable. A reflection of God's power and wisdom over creation and the continued sustaining of that creation.

One last thing to leave you with. In Matthew 8, after Jesus had just calmed the raging seas, the disciples say this: "What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?” (v.27) I bet you've read that a few times and thought, "Wow, to have been there." But is not Christ Lord over all right this very moment? Does he not uphold all things by the word of his power? Did the seas only obey him when he was incarnate on earth? You can see Christ acting in this manner through His creation everywhere; you just have to look for it. In our case, the moon's control over the tides of the earth's oceans is a shadow of the quelling of the seas in Matthew 8 and also of the glory and power to come.
