The Midterms Won’t Save This Country

435. That's how many U.S. House seats will be up for election this November. In case you need to brush up on your schooling, that's all of them. Every single representative in the U.S. House will be up for grabs this coming November. On top of that, there will be 34 U.S. Senate seats up for grabs. This brings our total potential politician change to 469 this November. While the Democrats strategize to maintain power, the Republicans plot to take back control, and the Libertarians keep shouting freedom from the corner, the American people wait in anticipation of what Washington will look like come January. But what if I told you it doesn't matter?

Israel & Kingship

Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.” 1 Samuel 8:4-9

Fairly early in the life of the Israeli people, they began to demand a king to rule over them. Joshua was long gone and we see in the book of Judges that Israel continuously appointed bad men to be judges. The country waxed and waned until it became desperately wicked (Judges 21:25). Apparently, they thought a king would save them from their troubles. They got the idea of needing a king because they wanted to be like all the nations. God calls it for what it is when he tells Samuel that they aren’t rejecting Samuel’s leadership, but God’s Kingship. Then, Samuel proceeds to telling Israel what their demand for a king would bring: military drafts, taxes, land seizures, forced labor, etc. This isn’t me building up to saying we should do away with government, sorry to all of you anarchists and cage stage libertarians. What this is building up to is an observation that this was the proverbial snowflake that started the avalanche. It was this very mindset that let the Jewish people, when the King of the Universe Jesus Christ was on trial in front of their very faces, shout “We have no King but Caesar!” (John 19:15) Their King was Christ, and He was right there, long awaited. However, their allegiance was to the worldly government rather than the heavenly. They had grown so accustomed to kingship, and Israel lacked a Jewish king, that they chose to worship Caesar instead of God.

Thus is America at the moment. There was a time not too long ago that you could have recorded someone leaving Church and saying, “We have no King but Trump!” Even now, some of our progressive brothers signal that they have “No King but Joe!” Our dependency on Christ has decreased, while our dependency on government, politicians, presidents, has increased. While our dependency on Big Government increases, the percentage of God fearing men and women that make up that government decreases (which is a separate issue). No wonder the government has become as big an invasive as it has. We hand over all of our power to them like some sort of sacrifice and hope that they will rain blessings down on us. We are $28 trillion dollars in debt and I clear about 20 pot holes on the course of my drive from home to work. Where exactly are the blessings? I digress.

Washington Corruption

Washington is a swamp full of broken people. Think back to all of the lockdown double standards we read about in the news. Consider the amount of money hidden away in the relief bills. Ponder on the insider trading that is just overlooked for convenience sake. Would you like to be angry about something? If so watch this video of Rand Paul showing you what the government spends your money on. Did you also think that taxation without representation ended after the tea hit the Boston Harbor? Wrong. Our representatives are humans too. They battle greed and pride. The difference between them and you is the fact that they are actually in a position to take advantage of it. How many representatives do you honestly think properly represent their constituents? There are more back room deals in Washington than front room. Look at the Hunter Biden laptop story or even the most recent Jared Kushner $2b deal. It’s on both sides. Sometimes, we are left to wonder if the corruption we see in West Wing or House of Cards is even the full picture, and that’s saying something. That’s why I want to tell you it doesn’t matter. There’s a deeper issue that needs to be addressed and it has nothing to do with how much red or blue is in the Capitol Building.

Heart of the Matter

It’s easy to look around and see the collective depravity of our country. We have come from a culture that thought women shouldn‘t wear bikinis or pants above the calf to one that is only a step or two away on the icy slope from normalizing pedophilia. MAPs anyone? We sacrifice on average 2,363 children in the womb per day. Homosexual unions are not only legal but encouraged. We are allowing our children to tell us what or who they think they are and are confirming it by castrating them. We are seriously depraved and if you ask me, it all started when we took prayer out of public schools. I’m kidding.

It started long before that, in a place called Eden. Because of the sin of our federal head Adam, sin has plagued humanity for almost its entire existence (Romans 5:12-21). Now we all have to deal with the outcome. Man looks for evil at every chance he can. Selfish, insolent, idolatrous, boastful, the list goes on and we are all guilty. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, including the politicians in Washington and your local state congress. That’s why it’s folly to look to them for salvation. These men and women can’t save themselves so how do you expect them to save you? Can you count on one hand how many of the candidates for the 435 seats are loud and proud professing Christians? And not just the little c christians that post on Christmas and Easter. Would you let these people raise your kids? So why are you hoping they will establish a pie in the sky utopia? The providential hand of God that was restraining our sinful nature as a country appears to have been removed and we have been turned over to our sin (Romans 1). Like the Amorites, our iniquity appears to be almost full (Genesis 15:16). However, there is hope.

Jesus. Is. Lord

He is Lord over all.

“I saw in the night visions,

and behold, with the clouds of heaven

there came one like a son of man,

and he came to the Ancient of Days

and was presented before him.

And to him was given dominion

and glory and a kingdom,

that all peoples, nations, and languages

should serve him;

his dominion is an everlasting dominion,

which shall not pass away,

and his kingdom one

that shall not be destroyed.

Daniel 7:13–14

He is Lord over your job, over your marriage, over your church, over your community, circumstances, desires, thoughts, actions, He is Lord. Abraham Kuyper gives us comfort with these words: “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!” The only thing that will save this country right now is Godly revival and reformation. As Jared Longshore says in the wonderful video below, “America, Ye must be born again.” Until America is born again, it does not matter if the 535 U.S. Congress seats are all blue or all red. We will be left dead in our sins, like a man in a dark room feeling around for a light switch, like all those of Sodom that were struck blind and left clawing at the door of Lot’s house so that they could ”know” the angels.

So where does this reformation start? With you. In your home leading your family (men) or submitting to your husbands and loving him (ladies). It starts with catechizing your children and teaching them the Word of God so that we will effectively raise up dragon slayers. It starts in your place of work where you spend the second most amount of time per week, making sure people know that you submit to the one true King of the universe. It starts in your private devotion, in your words, in your actions. Be the reason someone wants to know more about Christ. Lastly, churches. The place where it all comes together. Where the people who are carrying out these individual responsibilities meet to partake in our chief spiritual warfare through our worship. This is where we regroup and sharpen our swords and exhort one another to go back out to the front lines for the rest of the week. Start building Christian communities now. Stop spending all of your time and resources on the world and its pursuits and start pouring into those who are part of the same body as you. We are approaching a time where it will be more important than it has ever been in our country’s history to be rooted and established in the Word and in communities that are a necessary product of that Word being lived out. Fear not, for our Lord gives us these words to cling to: “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

God bless you, thanks for reading.
